Newsletters

Newsletters can be the most fun to write!

Every company has a different goal and approach to their continous outreach. A large, well-known retail brand may focus on highlighting products and special offers.

A lot of smaller brands can benefit from a more intimate approach, telling stories, rounding up new content, sharing news, offering tips… whatever feels like a great way to keep connections strong with their audience.

I see newsletters as a wonderful way to demonstrate brand values. To not only talk about what the brand’s values are, but to tell stories and offer free value as evidence that the brand lives by those values.

For a few years I volunteered as Secretary for the woman’s organization in my local church. One of my many responsibilities was to get information about events, etc. to all of the women in the group. The President of the organization also had a goal to re-energize the group and get attendance numbers up, as moral had recently been low and people were not attending events.

I came up with the idea of sending out a comprehensive and entertaining newsletter. One that the ladies might actually enjoy reading. Inside each edition, which we sent out weekly, I included a spotlight about one of the members so they could also start getting to know each other better.

Of course, with this being my idea, it also became my weekly task. I gathered all the information, created memes to make it more visually appealing and uplifting, and wrote creative spotlights.

In order to accommodate all of this, I had a system of inviting and interviewing 4 ladies in a batch, so I would never fall behind on the spotlights.

I’m happy to say that these efforts did yield the intended results. Attendance at activities increased significantly. I received many, many compliments about how entertaining the emails were and how ladies looked forward to reading them. Most ladies were enthusiastic about participating in the spotlight (which I was a bit concerned about initially).

Here is one sample newsletter, plus some additional spotlights. Don’t worry- names have been changed to protect the innocent.
